2012 National Dump the Pump Day

posted 06/14/2012

"Dump the Pump. Save Money. Ride Transit."

Chatham Area Transit announced today that it will join with other public transportation systems nationwide to participate in the seventh annual National Dump the Pump Day on Thursday, June 21, 2012.  The slogan of this year’s National Dump the Pump Day is “Dump the Pump.  Save Money.  Ride Transit.”

Sponsored by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), National Dump the Pump Day is a day that encourages people to ride public transportation and save money, instead of driving a car.  Started in June 2006 when gas prices were $3 per gallon, this national day emphasizes that public transportation is a great travel option that also helps people save money.

Since gas prices reached $4 or more this year, saving money is on everyone’s minds, and public transportation is the quickest way to beat high gas prices.  According to the latest APTA Transit Savings Report, individuals in a two-person household can save an average of more than $10,000 annually by downsizing to one car.

Chatham Area Transit passengers will travel fare-free on Thursday, June 21, 2012! So why not try transit today and help Chatham County become the "greenest county in Georgia."

Additionally, CAT will participate in the 4th Annual Dump the Pump Challenge – a race between a cyclist, a bus commuter and a car commuter.  The defending Dump the Pump Challenge winner, Frank McIntosh, has retired; Kristen Mulzer will represent the Savannah Bicycle Campaign this year and pedal to the finish point at City Hall. Bill Broker, CAT Board Member, will represent the bus commuter, and Sean Brandon, Mobility Manager for the City of Savannah, will drive a car. All three competitors will start from the Twelve Oaks Shopping Center on Abercorn Street and travel downtown to City Hall. Mayor Edna Jackson will be on hand to congratulate the winner as he or she crosses the finish line. Good luck, competitors!

Follow-up:

Congratulations to Kristen Mulzer, who rode her bicycle into First Place at the City Hall finish line! She continues the cyclists' dominance for the past four years of the Savannah Dump the Pump Challenge, carrying on the legacy of Frank McIntosh. We'd like to thank her, Sean Brandon, and our own Board Member Bill Broker for their participation in this fun event. Our gratitude also goes out to Mayor Edna Jackson for greeting our contestants at City Hall and officially announcing the winner. We always have a great time with this race, and we look forward to seeing all of you again next year! Please visit our Facebook page for pictures from this event, and remember to look for ways to Dump the Pump throughout the rest of the year as well.
