Skilled competitors, camaraderie and good food were ingredients that contributed to the success of our Bus Roadeo and employee picnic. Held on Sunday, April 22nd in the rear parking lot of the Garden City Recreation Center, the events enabled employees and their families to unite and enjoy friendly competition, food and fun!
Since its inception in 1988, the Bus Roadeo has served as an arena for qualified Transportation and Maintenance employees to showcase their driving skills and prove their knowledge of safety procedures. The event consists of a written safety quiz, a pre-trip bus inspection, a personal appearance checklist, and a timed obstacle course. Participants use personal driving style and know-how to maneuver through the obstacle course, which included a series of complete hairpin turns and master driving precision.
This year, in the paratransit division, Tameca Cammon placed first. Among the fixed route operators, Frederick “Flash” Gordon won the first place trophy, Fred Shuman placed second, and Veronica Smalls captured the third place prize. Winner Flash Gordon will advance to the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) international competition being held in Long Beach, CA in May. Best of luck to you, Flash!
Following the Roadeo, employees, their families, and some special guests who were available on Sunday enjoyed delicious food off the grill and some great fun and games. Some of the highlights included water games, face-painting, a rock-climbing wall, basketball tournament, and hula hoop competition. A wonderful time was had by all, and we give our sincerest thanks to all who participated.
